OBIT/Lawrence G. Rawl, Former Exxon Chairman and Philanthropist, Dies at 76

IRVING, Texas, Feb 14, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Lawrence G. Rawl, former chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Exxon Corporation (now Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM)), died on Feb. 13, 2005, in Fort Worth, Texas. He was 76.

Born in 1928 in New Jersey, Mr. Rawl enlisted and served in the U.S. Marine Corps at the end of World War II. Following his military service, Mr. Rawl entered the University of Oklahoma and received a degree in petroleum engineering. He immediately joined Humble Oil & Refining Company, the predecessor to Exxon Company, USA. After a series of increasingly responsible jobs in Exxon Company, USA, he was appointed its executive vice president. He was subsequently elected executive vice president and director of Esso Europe in London. In 1980, he joined Exxon Corporation in New York as a senior vice president and director. He was named president of the corporation in 1985. In 1987 he was elected chairman and chief executive officer of the Corporation, a post he held until he retired in May of 1993.

In 1992 Mr. Rawl was inducted into the Distinguished Graduates Society of the College of Engineering at the University of Oklahoma. He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters at the same institution in May of 1993. He went on to establish the Lawrence G. Rawl Engineering Scholarship Fund there in 1995.

Throughout his life, Mr. Rawl was committed to philanthropic work. In 1997 he founded the LGR Foundation, originally organized for the advancement of the interests of children and youth in the State of Texas. This mission was later broadened to include issues relating to Alzheimer's disease. He was active in Junior Achievement, once being head of its New York chapter. He was also a member of the Board of Visitors of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Mr. Rawl served as a director of Texas Medical Center, Texas Commerce Bancshares, Warner-Lambert Company, Champion International Corporation, and the American Petroleum Institute.

Private family services will be held in Austin.
