ExxonMobil Awarded License for the World's Largest SCANfining Unit

FAIRFAX, VA, December 19 -- ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company (EMRE) announced today it has signed a licensing agreement with an undisclosed U.S. refinery for the use of SCANfining, ExxonMobil's proprietary gasoline sulfur reduction process for the production of Tier II Gasoline. The unit, slated to be the world's largest SCANfining application to date, will operate at 70 thousand barrels per stream day (kBSD).

Successfully demonstrated at ExxonMobil refineries and EMRE licensee facilities, SCANfining selectively removes sulfur from catalytically cracked naphtha while minimizing octane loss. SCANfining, which uses a proprietary, selective catalyst (RT 225) jointly developed by EMRE and Akzo Nobel Catalysts, minimizes the loss of octane-rich olefins and hydrogen consumption. In addition to ExxonMobil's six SCANfining units totaling a capacity of more than 250 kBSD, this pioneering technology has thirteen licensee committed units with a total capacity of more than 425 kBSD.

ExxonMobil is a leading global oil, natural gas, and petrochemicals company whose subsidiaries have operations in nearly 200 countries and territories. Additional information regarding ExxonMobil and technologies it licenses can be found at: http://www.exxonmobil.com/refiningtechnologies.

*Note: SCANfining is a proprietary process name of Exxon Mobil Corporation or its affiliates.
